for a fabulous meal, i can always count on my bestie to pick something good. for our end of summer vacation, jack and i spent a few days relaxing by the pool in laguna niguel and then we made our way to santa monica to visit friends and enjoy the scene. a must-go-to if you’re in los angeles is the the tasting kitchen. we could not have been happier with the meal and experience as a whole.
we didn’t have a reservation so we went in on a whim and were hoping to snag a few seats at the communal table. lucky for us though, they had a table available so we sat down eagerly and perused the menu. i had checked it out online and wasn’t quite sure what to expect… quite honestly, the descriptions were beyond my culinary vocabulary so i was very happy when we agreed to do the tasting menu as a table : )
the starters seemed basic; a mixed fried vegetable dish (they had a much fancier term for it than that) and mussels. the depth of flavor and richness in the mussels however, was incredible. i assure you, there was nothing basic about them! we wound up asking for more bread just so we could soak up the broth. and the vegetables (artichokes, corgette, tomatoes) were savory, crisp and fried just long enough to have a bit of a crunch. we were off to a good start!
for the mains, they brought us a hanger steak, sinful pasta dish and pork done three ways. the pork belly was my favorite; it had a rich, smokey flavor and just seemed to melt in my mouth. it was served with caramelized peaches and a sweet reduction. following in close second was the pasta. thankfully there were four of us at the table, otherwise, i think i could have polished this one off by myself. it was a sausage laced dish with a bit of shaved parmesan and breadcrumbs across the top. heaven on a fork.
finally, to top it off, an assortment of sorbets, chocolate mousse, banana semifreddo and vanilla panna cotta were brought out. we were so beyond full at this point but couldn’t resist just a taste of each. again, each was original, interesting and most importantly, delicious! the thought and depth of flavor behind each of the dishes we tried was impressive. i’ll be back for sure~
kudos to kate for such a great pick!
