we were actually trying to go to shelter last night but wound up at cubana social instead. shelter unfortunately had a private party event so we weren’t able to get a table there but we already had a hearts set on empanadas… never fear, you don’t have to go too far in williamsburg to get your fix. we walked a block over and found that cubana social had duck confit empanadas on special. perfect.
cubana social is a very warm, lively place that serves up delicious cuban comfort food in a setting that aims to feel like a 40′s social club. most nights you’ll find great jazz bands taking stage and signature cocktails all around.
we started with the empanada special, i’d highly recommend you give these a shot as well. the duck confit and sour cherry filling hit those savory sweet notes and the green chile sauce on top balanced out the dish. after that, i wasn’t shy, i dug into a grass-fed cheese burger with house cured chorizo served with a harissa aioli sauce and delicious cured pickles. best of all, it was topped with those skinny, crunchy potato sticks you can never seem to get enough of. jack had the fish special; a panko crusted hake. it was also very good, nice and crispy on the outside and a perfectly firm and tender center.
we went at around 7pm and luckily were able to get a table for 4 but you may want to make a reservation if you’re going on a friday or saturday night. the vibe is casual, the music is good and the food is very tasty. definitely give it a try~
